Pat Mac Anally · Gold Coast Celebrant
Pat Mac Anally has conducted around 400 funerals. He will meet your family, learn who the person was, write the ceremony, and stand up and deliver it. A funeral service is $600.
Call Pat. There is nothing to prepare before you do — no forms, no decisions made in advance, no list of things you were supposed to have ready. He will ask what has happened, tell you plainly what he can do and when, and give you a straight price. If he cannot do the date, he will say so on that call rather than leave you waiting.
Most families reach this page a few days out, often while the funeral director is still arranging things. That is normal, and it is enough time.
A funeral celebrant is the person who conducts the service — who stands at the front, holds the shape of the thing, and speaks about the person who has died. Not clergy, and not the funeral director. The director handles the practical arrangements; the celebrant handles the ceremony itself.
With Pat, that means four things:
Families who want to speak themselves are welcome to, and Pat will make room for it in the order of service. Families who cannot face speaking do not have to. Either is normal, and neither needs explaining.
Pat's fee is $600. That covers the meeting with your family, the writing of the ceremony, and conducting the service on the day. There is no deposit, no separate writing fee and no charge for the first conversation.
Travel is included across the Gold Coast. Further out, Pat settles it with you or with the funeral director on the phone — there is no formula and no surprise, just a figure agreed before the day. The funeral director's costs — the venue, the cremation or burial, the coffin, the flowers, the notices — are separate and are not billed through Pat.
Some families want a religious element and some want none at all. Pat conducts the service either way, and it is your family's call, not his.
If you want the service to be entirely secular, it will be. If you would like a prayer included, or a reading from scripture, or a blessing said over the coffin, Pat can do that — you tell him what you want and in what form, and he includes it. He will offer the option once so that nobody has to think to ask for it, and then he will follow whatever you decide.
The same applies to hymns, music, poems, a minute's silence, and anything a particular family or culture would expect to happen. If you are not sure what you want, say that too. Pat has sat with a great many families who did not know where to start.
Direct cremations have become far more common since 2020, and a lot of families find themselves in an odd position afterwards: the cremation is done, there was no service, and it does not feel finished.
A memorial service can be held afterwards — days, weeks or months later — with no time pressure and none of the constraints that come with a funeral. It can be held anywhere: a home, a garden, a hall, a beach, a club. Pat conducts these the same way and for the same fee, and because the urgency is gone there is usually more time to do it properly.
Around 400 funerals. That is the honest answer, and it is the only one that matters here — a service is not the day to find out whether somebody can hold a room.
What experience buys a family is mostly invisible. Nobody is left standing when they should be sitting. The order of service does not stall. If someone breaks down mid-eulogy, the room is held until they are ready, and if they cannot go on, their words get read for them. A name is not mispronounced. The thing simply proceeds, and the family is free to grieve rather than manage it.
He also holds a Master of Counselling from the University of Notre Dame Australia. He does not offer counselling and will not pretend to — but sitting with a family in the first days after a death, and listening properly to what they are trying to say about someone, is work he has been trained to do.
At a funeral the celebrant is never the story. Pat has always worked that way, and families tend to notice it afterwards rather than at the time.
He is Irish-born, has lived on the Gold Coast for many years, and is also a registered marriage celebrant. More about Pat →

Usually within a few days, which is the normal timeframe. Call and ask about the specific date — he will tell you straight away whether he is free.
For a burial or cremation, yes — the director handles the practical and legal side. Pat works alongside them. A memorial service held after a direct cremation does not require a director.
No, and you do not have to be non-religious either. The service is built the way your family wants it.
Yes, as many as you like. Pat will place them in the order of service and step in to read for anyone who finds they cannot go on.
That is the usual position. Pat will ask about the person and the shape of the service comes out of that conversation.
